by Kevin Ostrowski
Popular legend has Dom Perignon uttering, “Come quickly, I am tasting the stars!” when he first sipped the beloved Champagne at the Abbey Hautviller. A favorite of Presidents, Prime Ministers and pop stars, sparkling wines are now made all over the world; and all of us are familiar with the joy of seeing them appear for those moments of celebration – weddings, graduations, new babies, New Year’s Eve and, sometimes, when we celebrate the fact that it is Friday and the weekend is just beginning!
One of our PA Wine Society members from Western Pennsylvania, Kevin Ostrowski, will share with us his presentation on the history, production, styles, and stories of sparkling wines from around the world. Starting with Champagne of course, we will also hear about Spanish Cava and Italian Prosecco, to mention a few. Now retired, Kevin holds credentials from the Society of Wine Educators as a Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW); with the WSET 3; as a Certified Wine Judge with the American Wine Society (AWS); and, Kevin has judged our PWS Pennsylvania Wine Excellence competition. He will share his passion for wine, and specifically sparkling wines, on Sunday, January 10, at 3:30 PM EST.
Editor’s Note: Kevin will discuss the gamut of sparkling wines during this event, which makes for an endless list of possible choices that our viewers could secure in advance of the program. We will surely touch upon any particular style of sparkling wine that you decide to sip with us; but it would be difficult, if not impractical, for you to pop the corks from multiple bottles during an hour-long presentation, only to have them go flat before you can finish them! So, to simplify things, we are opening up the wine choices to your discretion this time.
Secure one or several bottles of sparkling wines for the event. The choice is all yours. Ask a friend’s recommendation, mix it up, take a risk, stay with one you know and like, compare a few different ones, try something new, or whatever you choose to do. The sparkling wine styles we will discuss include: Champagne (France); Crémant (France); Cava (Spain); Prosecco (Italy); Moscato d’Asti (Italy); Lambrusco (Italy); Sekt (Germany); Cap Classique (South Africa); Sparkling Shiraz (Australia); and, sparkling wines from the United States that are made in the Traditional Method. So, shop till your heart’s content – there should still be some good bottles in the Fine Wine and Good Spirits stores just post the holidays.
Don’t forget to pre-chill any bottles that you intend to open during the event. Then all you need do is grab your wine glass, flute or coupe and settle into a comfy seat. Plan now to join us for this star-studded sparkling wine review!
