South of the Mason-Dixon – Black Ankle Vineyards Field Trip

October 11 @ 11:00 am - 1:30 pm

$25 - $30

by Marty Cook

The Pennsylvania Wine Society will host an outdoor event on Sunday, October 11th , 11 a.m.—1:30 p.m. at Black Ankle Vineyards, located outside of Mt. Airy, Maryland (approximately a 65 mile drive from the Camp Hill/Mechanicsburg area). This is not just any winery. Black Ankle Vineyards (named after the road on which it is located) is highly acclaimed for its excellent wines and just an overall “first class act” that begins with its polished customer service oriented staff, continues with its great sustainability story, and culminates in some of the best American wines you will every taste! One measure of this assertion is that Black Ankle Vineyards is frequently included on most lists of Top 100 North American Wineries as being at or around the 75th best!

Black Ankle has an enormous outdoor venue, and our event will enjoy the exclusive use of a spacious area designated as “The Terrace”. Due to the space allocated to us for this event, seating will be spread out such that ample physical distancing can be observed with comparative ease. This also explains why seating is limited. As of this writing, only sixteen seats remain from the original 36 allocated seats. If you wish to join us, we urge you to secure your reservations soon (see end of article for registration information).

Everyone in attendance at our October 11th event will receive ten 2-ounce pours of exquisite Black Ankle Vineyards wines to taste. The featured wines include:

2019 Albariño (BAV’s signature white grape) – 100% Albariño. This wine is bright and vibrant with crisp acidity. There is an elusive creamy note that wends its way through around mid-palate. Full-bodied yet refreshing, our 2019 Albariño has an expressive nose and juicy palate with aromas of white peach, lemon-lime, melon, and mineral that are surrounded by lovely floral aromas.

2019 Chardonnay – 97% Chardonnay, 2% Viognier, 1% Grüner Veltliner. Fermented and then aged for 8 months in French oak
Delicious and easy drinking, our 2019 Chardonnay will become your go to white and will go with just about anything you would like to pair with it. Lovely aromas and flavors of citrus, tropical and white fruits, and lovely florals, this wine’s juicy acidity and smooth easy nature are sure to please straight through to that long mineral and citrus zest finish.

2018 Chardonnay Reserve – 100% Chardonnay. The 2018 Reserve Chardonnay’s apple pie, tropical fruit, citrus, and mineral notes merge with the soft oak notes in this golden wine. The palate feels weighty and has a nice interplay between the juicy acidity and the creamy (almost buttery) texture with flavors of pineapple, nectarine, and lemon zest as it leads to a lengthy mineral and citrus finish.

2019 Passeggiata (a table blend) – from Italian, to go for a walk or stroll. It is complex; a chameleon – depending on serving temperature, the flavors can go from the tart fruits leading to the darker, richer flavors leading and the acidity tempered by the warmer temperatures. That elusive earthiness pops through. It makes you think of a Pinot Noir – the color, some of the flavors, the floral and herbal notes…

2016 Leaf-Stone – A Limited Release Syrah. It features a palate of blackberry, chocolate, blueberry, plum, pepper spice, licorice, tobacco, black currant, and dried herb. The finish is long and warm with wonderful acidity and firm tannins. Full-bodied and refined, it gives your entire mouth something to relish from one sip to the next!

2018 Syrah – 75% Syrah, 8% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Pinot Noir, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot. Medium-bodied, easy drinking, our 2018 Syrah features loads of plum, red fruit, floral, and vanilla aromas that easily meld with tobacco, cola, and baking spice notes before ending in a warm finish featuring plum and pepper.

Feldspar IV – 45% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec. 15% aged 30 months in oak; 85% aged 18 months in oak. Every bit as complex as its premium Bordeaux-style blend siblings, our smooth, easy drinking Feldspar IV offers plenty of ripe fruit, but enough zip and tannin to keep you on your toes.  Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, plum, dark and red berries, cigar box, vanilla, licorice, cedar, and pepper spice all play well with each other and lead to a long, warm cherry, plum, and pepper finish.

Slate 5 – 39% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot, 21% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec. Full bodied yet refined, Slate 5 is a wine to relish one sip to the next with balanced tannin and acidity, and a finish that is very long with pepper spice, tobacco, & plum notes – lingering floral notes in the glass.

2017 Crumbling Rock – 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, 13% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec. 15% aged 30 months in oak; 85% aged 18 months in oak (50% new) An excellent vintage year. Sooth, rich, and complex are only some of the superlatives that can go with this wine. Look for lovely black fruits, chocolate cherry, baking spice, sweet wood, floral, and tobacco notes dancing together in the glass!

Terra Dulce VIII – A Port-style dessert wine with the smooth richness and color of a Tawny Port.

A limited food menu of cheese, crackers, and the like are available for purchase at Black Ankle, but you are highly encouraged to pack a picnic basket and enjoy the foods you prefer with Black Ankle’s delightful wines! As a special courtesy to all our group’s registrants, Black Ankle Vineyards has graciously extended a 30% discount on all purchases made that day at the winery!
