On Friday evening, April 24 at 7:00 pm at the Hilton Harrisburg, we will be experiencing a special event featuring nine carefully selected wines from the Winebow LLS Italian portfolio. We are honored to have as our guest speaker, Massimo Squitieri, the Pennsylvania Manager of Winebow.
LLS is named for Leonardo Locasio Selections. Leonardo Locasio was one of the greatest purveyors of Italian fine wines for decades. He earned the respect of Italian fine wine consumers with his acquired knowledge gained over decades of work with some of the best producers in Italy. We are pleased to put his knowledge and relationships to work for the PWS members and guests in this upcoming tasting. The Wine List:
The Greeting Wine: Mastroberardino Mastro Greco Campania IGT 2017. This wine is straw yellow in color with an intense bouquet of tropical fruit and white flowers. This Greco is fresh and fruity on the palate, with a lively acidity. 100% Greco.
Argiolas Costamolino Vermentino di Sardegna DOC 2018. Vermentino often shows the fragrance of macchia, the mix of evergreen shrubs and herbs that typifies the Sardinian landscape. Costamolino hints at aromas of pine and mint coupled with ripe stone fruit and sweet citrus. The palate is vibrantly crisp and textural, and finishes with lingering acidity. 90% Vermentino, 5% Sardo Bovale and 5% Carignano.
Damilano Langhe Arneis DOC 2018 is a crisp, correct expression of Piedmont’s best known native white variety. It is straw yellow in color and offers delicate fruity aromas. On the palate it displays elegant citrus flavors with a hint of spice and moderate acidity. 100% Arneis.
Zenato Lugana di San Benedetto DOC 2015 is a single vineyard white from the south shore of Lake Garda in Veneto. Light lemon-green in color, San Benedetto Lugana offers appealing notes of peaches, citrus, tropical fruit, and herbs, which are underscored by crisp acidity and supple body on the palate. 100% Trebbiano di Laguna. Wine Spectator 90 points.
Di Majo Norante Ramitello Molise Rosso DOC 2013. This wine is made from a selection of the best Montepulciano and Aglianico grapes grown in the Ramitello vineyard. Deep ruby-red in color, Ramitello offers aromas of plums, forest fruits, dark chocolate, leather, and licorice. On the palate, a rich and velvety body pushes flavors to continue over a long and intriguing finish. 85% Montepulciano and 15% Aglianico.
Altesino Rosso Toscana IGT 2016. This Super Tuscan has a vibrant ruby red color and inviting aromas of ripe berries and forest fruits. It’s incredibly supple on the palate, with excellent body and balanced structure. 80% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. James Suckling 90 points.
Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico DOCG 2015. Deep, ruby-red in color, this Chianti Classico offers aromas of ripe cherries and red plums, with subtle notes of toasted vanilla beans and purple flowers. On the palate, the wine displays a superbly structured character with bright acidity and a pleasantly savory finish. 100% Sangiovese. James Suckling 93 points.
Zenato Cresasso Corvina Veronese IGT 2011. Cresasso is named for the pebbly soil in which it is grown. “Sasso” translates as stone, and “cre” is the prefix of cretaceous. While the terrain is far from easy to cultivate, the native Corvina Veronese reaches optimal ripeness here. This wine has a rich garnet color. On the nose, it displays red fruits such as tart black cherries, plums, and also tobacco—all characteristic of the Corvina grape. On the palate the wine is soft and elegant, with Zenato’s trademark balance. 100% Corvina Veronese. Wine Advocate 92 points.
Zenato Ripassa Valpolicella Superiore DOC 2015. As soon as the dried grapes for Amarone are fermented, selected batches of Ripassa wine are “re-passed” over the Amarone lees, thus starting a second fermentation that slightly increases the alcohol content and gives the wine deeper color and more complex aromas and flavors. Deep ruby-red in color, this wine shows intense aromas of blackberries and black currants underscored by aromas of spice pepper, and a hint of leather. On the palate, it is smooth and viscous with well-balanced acidity and alcohol. 85% Corvina, 10% Rondinella, and 5% Oseleta. James Suckling 94 points.
